Long After Tonight Is All Over

Jimmy Radcliffe

The Record

What Happened

Jimmy Radcliffe died in a Bronx veterans' hospital on 27 July 1973, aged 36. Wigan Casino opened fifty-eight days later. His voice sent the room home at eight in the morning every weekend for eight years and he never knew it. Musicor issued Long After Tonight Is All Over around October 1964. Cash Box gave it a B plus and America gave it nothing at all. Britain bought it new, and it peaked on entry at number 40 in February 1965 before falling away. Radcliffe made his living elsewhere. He sang on over two hundred television and radio commercials, including the McDonald's line You Deserve A Break Today, often without being told the product before he walked in.
