New Northern Soul

The New
Northern 50

Post-2000 recordings, ranked for the floor, and every one of them pressed on vinyl you can buy.

The Argument

The Scene
Almost Died

Northern Soul was on life support through the eighties and nineties. It stayed elitist and refused to move with the dance floors around it, while rave, acid jazz, techno and a dozen new tribes took the rooms. Young soul boys and girls kept dancing. A gulf as wide as the Atlantic opened between a UK scene run on nostalgia and dogmatic DJs, and North America, where the music started and where the new tunes are coming from.

This club exists to close that gap. Oldies and rarities for a new American crowd, and a second canon built from New Northern records. Northern Soul was always angsty lyrics, soulful singers and gorgeous arrangements, made mostly by American kids trying to earn a living. Those songs lit up a dark and dangerous world.

A new scene has to blend the old with the new, and carry the spirit which made Wigan, Blackpool and Stoke matter to a generation. Listen to these with an open heart and a spring in your dance.

Keep the Faith.

Why this list has no home in Britain

The UK allnighter circuit is closed to this material, by policy and by temperament. Every published playlist there is 100 per cent vintage. New England is your scene, and we are not policing a 1974 rulebook. Soulelujah in Cambridge runs weekly with no era restriction, and it is the one US room where this list already works.

If you buy a single compilation, make it this one. Modern Northern Soul on Acid Jazz collects a good share of the fifty below.

Rarity and Price

Buy Early

This scene never learned to press enough records, and the modern producers copied the habit. Runs of 100 to 600 copies are standard across Sonic Wax, Big AC, Record Kicks and Fiesta.

Scarcity here is manufactured rather than historical, and it behaves differently from a 1966 Detroit press run. These records are cheap on release and expensive six months later, so buying early is the whole strategy.

  • Current US label stock is cheap and fast.
  • The Acid Jazz back catalogue is out of print, secondhand and UK-held, so $15 to $25 postage doubles the cost of a $12 record.
  • A handful have crossed into collector territory. Tony Christie at $95 to $140 for a 2010 record is scarcity pricing outrunning musical value.

Method

How These
Fifty Were Chosen

01

Recorded After 2000

New performances only. Previously unissued 1960s masters are excluded however new the pressing, which removes most of what UK dealers file under new releases.

02

Released on Vinyl

A 45 is preferred. LP tracks, 12-inch singles and EPs appear where no 45 exists, and the format is stated in every row. CD-only and digital-only material is excluded, which removes the whole of the Ian Levine Northern Soul 2024 album except the four tracks pressed separately.

03

Uptempo and 4/4

Roughly 115 to 140 BPM, a driving beat and a big vocal. That removes most of the American retro-soul revival, which is built at 60 to 100 BPM by design.

04

Ranked on Floor Function

Then provenance, then evidence of adoption. Records fronted by genuine 1960s Northern vocalists rank higher, because the voice is the part modern productions get wrong most often. Dean Parrish, Clem Curtis, Lynda Laurence, Keni Burke, The Flirtations and Lorraine Silver all sing on records in this list.
